The London Aquatic Club helps its 260 swimmers develop the skills, will and attitude to overcome all challenges, both in the swimming pool and in life.
The club itself is facing a new challenge, having lost its primary training and competition location at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre for seven months (from April to November, 2014).
London’s first Olympic-sized (50m) indoor pool, which was built in 1991, is undergoing an extensive $6 million renovation, which hopefully will see it last for another 25 years.
In the interim, LAC has had to seek additional pool time at other London facilities and has received support from numerous organizations, including the City of London (Carling Heights Optimist Community Centre and Thames Park outdoor pool), Western University, the Central branch of the YMCA of Western Ontario, the Robarts School for the Deaf, and the Memorial Boys & Girls Club. Each has provided time and space for the LAC, London’s biggest club, to continue pursuing excellence in competitive swimming.
LAC is hopeful that some of these new partnerships will provide the organization with the opportunity to expand even more, now having pool access at facilities across the city.
The club just concluded its winter season, with a training camp in Florida for 15 of its top swimmers, and the Spring National Championships/Commonwealth Games Trials in Victoria, B.C., in which four LAC swimmers competed. Now, we are in the early preparatory stage for the summer season, with meets coming up in London, St. Catharines, Ottawa, Brantford, Montreal, Saskatoon, Winnipeg and Ohio between now and the end of July.
